I have a picture somewhere of daffodils in full flower, weighed down by about 3 inches of snow. I recall it was taken in early April about 8 years back. Very unusual for the south west of England, but it does happen from time to time. For the past three weeks the weather has been unusually warm and...
Mahler's 4th is odd. I have one recording that is light and an absolute joy. I've heard others, and they are dreary durges. I don't know whether his other symphonies are similar. Have fun. As said I despise classical music generally. There are some notable pieces however. The 4th I do not know. I d...
Minor cultural diversion. Used the student status to leverage some (relatively) cheap tickets for Mahler's 5th by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. IMG_5176.jpeg Previous showing here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KX7DkSbzJ8c I despise classical music usually but this was good . Booked a box (ju...
On second thoughts, nowadays I might prefer "opinions not alternative facts" :( Whenever someone draws a distinction on those matters I remind them that alternative facts are just lies. It seems to be an annual pilgrimage, so I'll probably end up there yet again after https://dunstabledow...
Had a test and measurement day out today! Kirkaldy Testing Museum in Southwark. Not quite electronics but they had some strain gauges and Tinsley bridges lying around. I'll not write up too much as there's a perfectly good Wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirkaldy_Testing_Museum ... the ...
But all done discreetly, in the best possible taste, and preferably behind a manicured lawn and net curtains. As per, IIRC, "Tropic of Ruislip" The TV adaptation was filmed in Carpenders Park, which is effectively a Norf Lndn equivalent to Surry. A friend lived on the estate at the time, ...
I grew up in Epsom, at the time of Joyce McKinney's famous "Mormon sex in chains" case. The journalists adjourned to the local pub, appropriately named The Spread Eagle. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manacled_Mormon_case I had never heard of that, perhaps surprisingly. Surrey is full of...
If your acolytes don't feel dirty enough have them run through the orgy room a couple of times before feeling them. Hey I aim to have better standards than the Mormons and Catholics! I grew up in Epsom, at the time of Joyce McKinney's famous "Mormon sex in chains" case. The journalists ad...
I might have "blotted my copybook" too, by too enthusiastically "thanking" of your posts! I don't really care if I also become an "enemy of the State", as I've experienced that with a previous employer! Urgh. The mentality... "Look at that guy over there agreeing ...
I've only seen overenthusiastic admiration of a celebrity, cf the depth perception problem surrounding Musk and Jobs and certain politicians. I can see why the likes of Musk and Jobs are admired. They both achieved a considerable amount. Jobs was certainly a very flawed person. I've never understoo...
That's my normal justification for being a pessimist realist. Occasionally I have to remind myself that I was one of the very few people that did see the 1999 total eclipse of the sun in Cornwall. There was a hole in the stratus from 5mins before start to 10mins after finish. A local friend of mine...
Being an optimist (?what?!) I hope that is wrong even if I fear it is (alt) right. I'd rather be pleasantly surprised than unpleasantly disappointed. A useful observation, but "lol emoji" ain't right  I think it's pretty hilarious. It's a fine example of a failure in the swiss cheese...
Moderation is an impossible task; it will always be wrong in one way or another. My concern is more the number of inane posts/posters. That seems to have been increasing faster over the past year, and several useful people have left, e.g. TiN, T3sl4co1l. Moderation can never be the answer to those....
