Can I bequest to my ex, since she got a portion of my retirement pension, that she go shit in her hat? This is alien to me. If I were to divorce my wife, which I do not plan to, we'd split our things, and then be done. I'd have to make sure that the costs for children under 18 were shared, bu...

I get my salary from the Public Service Fee -- I work at the Swedish Public Service broadcaster. I of course think we have a reason to exist, and that we need to have a sensible and stable financing and governance model. Further, I think we're more needed than ever, and that our mission needs reinfo...

It's the Moulin Noir, a lesser-known upstate NY landmark most remembered for being haunted by the unresting ghosts of slain tube rapists.

I have chaos. Having said that, I've made an effort to make a central repository for my electronically stored manuals. My distributed file system (think of a NAS but for grownups with too much time on their hands and a desire to do sysadmin work.) has a volume for them; it currently stands at 3816 M...

Regarding the "same acoustic space" concept, what is the "correct" sound in a concert hall? Sounds from two sections of the orchestra will have a different phase/delay on one side of the hall to the other side. Which is "correct"? Which is "incorrect"? To the...

I'm all for the "minimal intrusion" school. What Atkelar did to the 410C was in part reasonable, in part ever so slightly over the top. I told him as much -- the transformer rewinding was what was required, but the power inlet replacement would have been better with a Schurter C6 -- which ...

OK, so you delay the "local" A stream until the "remote" B stream has arrived. Or, rather, there are two remote streams, that arrive via different paths having been sampled in the same acoustic space. When they arrive, we must play them in phase. What happens if you also need th...

Given the right hardware, and a lot of legwork, we can lock two clocks into fractions of a µs over long distances. Which is a requirement we actually have. Locking clocks like that I can understand. But what might it mean w.r.t. agreeing the time? (.... refers to Leslie Lamport's partial ordering) ...

So far, I am more than happy to trust this counter as my "frequency reference". Probably closer than anything else I have by at least an order of magnitude. Which is good and all, but it is not just right! I have a few counters (like, many) and they're all a bit temperamental left to thei...

Strange. Wool is probably my favourite clothing material. As I have passed half a century in age, I tend to feel cold a lot more. Synthetics only work so far. Then, of course, it's probably mostly the more esoteric wools like Merino that attract me.

We got about 60-70mm over the course of the day yesterday. As I left work at about 17:00, the temperature was hovering around 0°C but it's plummeted to -5° or thereabouts, so I went out about at midnight and shoveled away the mounds left by the snow plough By then it still was possible to shovel; I ...

HP Labs was expected to fail most of the time. That sometimes avoided the divisions going down blind alleys, e.g. the Apple Newton in the early 90s. It also sometimes lead to new markets, e.g. PARISC machines becoming a standard for telecom SS7 servers. PA-RISC succeeded in telco partly thanks to E...

It's a 750 VA adjustable frequency, adjustable voltage AC power supply. Very cool. Much envy. About the only thing missing is 16 2/3 Hz as present on some (Germany, Austria, Schweiz, Sweden, Norway) European railway catenaries. This "one third of 50Hz" single-phase supply was especially d...
