Re: TEK TM503 Project

Finishing up this project. I made an executive decision to not replace the capacitor shown, plus one under it, on the TM503 supply at this time. In order to get the old ones out it will take major disassembly and lots of cursing to get the tabs unsoldered from the board. I have replacements in stoc...

You will pick up noise and fuzz up the trace with the cover off. I speak from experience.

Re-cap and initial check out of the PS503 Power Supply. Re-capped. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq70/923/yrRTCg.jpg After replacing the electrolytics and before replacing the tants decided to do an initial test. The supply came up fine, for about 5 minutes, then the positive supply went into c...

Re: Test Equipment Anonymous (TEA) : Discussion and Group Therapy Thread

Chris, I never got any warnings on the phone that the battery was failing. The only indication I got was when the rear cover seal broke.

Re: Test Equipment Anonymous (TEA) : Discussion and Group Therapy Thread

Surprise and a close call. This is my Moto 2021 Android phone. The rear case started separating. And the reason is clearly visible. The Lithium battery has swelled. Holy shit. I bought a new phone today. I'm leaving the old phone powered up but NOT charging until the battery goes completely ...

Re: TEK TM503 Project

The calibration of the FG501 went smoothly with just minimal adjustments required. This unit is now done. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq70/923/ZGV2gp.jpg Some sample waveforms. The output impedance of this function generator is 50 ohms so the 2465 vertical was set to 50 ohms. https://imagizer...

Re: TEK TM503 Project

Back on topic. Working the FG501 Function Generator. Checked the internally generated supply voltages and both the +17V and -17V were reading about 5.09V. U430, a 741 op amp, was dead. Replaced it and now voltages are correct. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq70/922/zoAvQE.jpg We now have an out...

Re: TEK TM503 Project

So today I attempted to calibrate the DCV and Ohms. It did not go well. All the internal voltages were checked as per the manual and were in spec. But the best I could do on DCV is +2.659V vs +2.501V. Definitely NFG. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq70/922/ghDy3i.jpg The Ohms did initially calib...

The old C35. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq70/924/2HmzZs.jpg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3at_Ev2kOoI New C35. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq70/924/xHCS6u.jpg Decided to see if any of the plug-in's work. The DMM works but is inaccurate. That reading should be 2.500V. Resistance is a...

Gotta love those little, or not so little, surprises and when you confront the seller you get a bunch of dumb and dumber.

The 500 series plug-in's with the switched out vacuum tubes comes to mind.

Re: TEK TM503 Project

The PSU cleaned up well and no shorts were found. A beautiful job, and no need for any over the top measures, quite likely to prove disappointing. All it took was a soft brush to loosen the caked on dust. The project is now on hold until the replacement capacitors arrive next week. The cost of the ...

C35 is open and confirmed with the Peak tester. Submitted the order for total re-cap of the main PSU and the plug-in...

It's tempting and I've used the dishwasher before to clean parts but I worry that the open frame power transformer won't like it. I'll come up with something to clean that PSU.

TEK TM503 Project

A local Facebook Marketplace find. Only $50 USD and we all know how much they go for on Evil Bay. TM503 with a DM501 DMM, FG501 Function Generator, and a PS503 Dual Supply. Unknown if it powers up. Seller got it from a storage unit and didn't have ability to test. It's damn dirty and will need a goo...
