Re: Test Equipment Anonymous (TEA) : Discussion and Group Therapy Thread

The EU seems to allow the "Knight Rider" indicators (turn signals) which don't meet the requirements (all indicators must come on simultaneously) in the UK at least. This is particuarly true when the "moving light is splt across the rear quarter and rear hatch / boot. Apart from that ...

Re: Test Equipment Anonymous (TEA) : Discussion and Group Therapy Thread

The EV I jump started was fine and had enough range in the traction battery to get home. It just needed the 12V battery charged so it would turn on. No idea why it discharged with power in the traction battery. On people falling asleep with dry cleaning its more likely to be "trike" Trichl...

Re: Test Equipment Anonymous (TEA) : Discussion and Group Therapy Thread

Went to the Thorpe Camp Radio Rally today. Mostly to sell. Not much TE sold and I didn't but any. I did have one first related to an earlier discussion on here: I "jump-started" an EV. Not a Tesla, a Hyundai. Owned by the seller next to me. Somehow over 4-5 hours they discharged the 12V le...

Re: Test Equipment Anonymous (TEA) : Discussion and Group Therapy Thread

Probably not a special charger but a reset of the battery mangement system. These systems use a small sensor on the battery connector to montor charge / discharge. If you charge the batttery by other means it upsets the controller causing all sorts of weird issues.

I've not watched the whole thing, but it doesn't set a good example of how to approach a restoration. Just start pulling it apart. :? What about a visual inspection, power up testing and recording of faults. Taking lots of photos is a good idea too. "I know I'm "preaching to the choir"...

Dispite being Irish enough to qualify for a passport if I wan't I haven't had a drink today - yet :) I've a bottle of 12year old Redbreast that will probably be bit lower before the days end. I was looking at a part on RS today (work so won't go into details) The website did not have much information and the drawing was of a completly different type of part. The datasheet was for the range and did not cover the exact part number. So I started a support "chat" Got a fairly promp...

Nice! And the 750VA transformer has to work at 20Hz. That means 3 times the core material compared to a 60Hz one. There are core materials that are better for low frequencies but they tend to be too lossy at the high end for this application. The modern ones are switch mode fith filtering so much sm...

Crows can count up to 2. Evidence comes from observing hides overlooking a field: one person goes into hide, crow don't come to field to eat one person leaves hide, crows come to the field two in, one out, crows don't come to field the second out, crows come to the field three in two out, crows com...

TGGZZZ beat me to it. Looks like a licence copy of the ESI / Tegam Dekapot. As that one has a variable resistor for the lowest deacade it was probably robbed from a bridge. Unusually thes use a R/2R network and double pole switches rather than 10 identical resistors. This give the 12 step "deca...

Re: Test Equipment Anonymous (TEA) : Discussion and Group Therapy Thread

Possibly because the fashion was for LCD and backlighting a large one evenly was difficult with the LEDs of the time, hence the CCFL backlighting in LCD scope screens of the era. I think I can beat the 177 for late date big LED display though, the Black Star 4503 has big LED digits. In fact, all th...

Re: Test Equipment Anonymous (TEA) : Discussion and Group Therapy Thread

Don't know why people are getting upset by this one. Yes the buyer is a PITA but many are. I'm more annoyed by the sellers who list as "Used" , which means fully working and then say untested in the description. Or "Used" and "tested working" when the photos show obviou...

I hope and expect it will prove a bona fide sale and all goes well. It's a story I'll follow with interest, as an ultrasonic cleaner is something I've toyed with the idea of buying for a time. I came to the conclusion I'd need two. 6l is great and can handle a lot of things easily, but there are al...

Re: Test Equipment Anonymous (TEA) : Discussion and Group Therapy Thread

The dodgy display on the 8060A is almost certainly a issue with the zebra strip. There ate two types used and the later one was often retrofitted to early meters. In any case it can almost always be cured by cleaning the strip. LCD contacts and PCB. Use a lint free claoth moistened, not wet, with 99...

Umm a Barretter. You don't see a lot of those these days. I do know of one current application. It's in the ignition circuit of some Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A turboprop engines. These have glow plugs rather then the more common high energy discharge system. Each of the two glowplugs is in seri...
