Well, a pleasant surprise for once.
I was trying to sell a treasure on fleabay, and since it hadn't sold I was in the process of sending an offer to the people watching it. I never managed to complete that, since someone bought it at the (very reasonable, naturally) asking price.

Re: Going free: Fluke 760A Voltage Calibrator
It seems that the Fluke 760A has got lost in this quite interesting thread, on other fora, we would have moderators screeching! It will run its course. I've had that thought, and that this thread would have been barely conceivable only 30 years ago. I remember reading https://philip.greenspun.com/s...

Re: Going free: Fluke 760A Voltage Calibrator
Not to mention some of the early Perth inhabitants were experts at breaking rocks. :D The Freo jail still stands as testament. Clearly a jail was a high priority: "The Roundhouse is the oldest public building in the State of Western Australia. Opened in January 1831, just 18 months after settl...

Re: Going free: Fluke 760A Voltage Calibrator
I think the Woolhouse looks a lot like what I remember, & the construction was very similar to the Fremantle one, but I thought they were both smaller. In retrospect, I'm surprised that I didn't take a photo back then. We did have a rather different attitude back then. Photos were taken on holi...

Re: Going free: Fluke 760A Voltage Calibrator
When I went to Southampton UK back in the day, one of the interesting sights was a warehouse from the mid 1400s, which was notable for some other reason now lost in the mists of receding memories. What struck me was that it was virtually indistinguishable from some made in Fremantle WA in the 1840s...

Re: Going free: Fluke 760A Voltage Calibrator
I've had similar experiences in the US... Taking an hour to drive the "five miles" from Palo Alto to San Francisco. Taking all day to get to a hotel just outside Yosemite Park. Then taking an hour to get there from there to the car park in Yosemite village. Up in the Rockies, seeing neighb...

Re: Going free: Fluke 760A Voltage Calibrator
I visited Scotland in 2001 and rented a car and had my experience with right hand drive. Didn't make any stupid mistakes especially at roundabouts. So I know what most of the roads are like. Narrow and twisty. Problems are... If I was in the centre of a narrow lane with something coming the other d...

35kg whichever way :( Then I take it you are not into boatanchor comms receivers. RA17 30 kg AR88 44 kg B40 46kg Certainly not! Boring things ;) I might be tempted by an HP8566 at 50kg, but that splits into 21+29kg lumps. Fortunately I have two 21GHz SAs that are more than good enough for me, but I...

Re: Going free: Fluke 760A Voltage Calibrator
These are British roads, they aren't long and straight, for the most part, where you could hit cruise control and doze off. Our roads are very narrow by comparison, and demand constant attention, especially in remote areas like that. If it were a breeze to drive there and back, I'd have it myself. ...

Re: Going free: Fluke 760A Voltage Calibrator
holy crap med......are you hearing the pissing and moaning from these brits about driving a couple of hours? Over here 100 miles is a long way, over there 100 years is a long time :) I was once in Copenhagen (Denmark) and had a couple of days to spare before getting home. So I went to Stresa (Italy...

Re: Going free: Fluke 760A Voltage Calibrator
It's an 8 hour drive from where I live. That's without a break, and at least two would need to be fitted in. I find a three hour drive is about as much as I find tolerable. Anyway, a day's traveling, staying somewhere overnight, then a day driving back. Tempting, but all considered, I'll pass. For ...

Re: Going free: Fluke 760A Voltage Calibrator
I have 1V and 10V sources plus a 7decade KVD. But not 1kV. Wel, I do have a 1kV electrophoresis PSU, but it is too noisy to be useful; thought required. I also have a Fluke515 calibrator, which does AC and DC to 100V. For AC I use a standard signal generator, and measure the voltage. I presume the A...

The Instrument Sketch Book, Weston 1956
A well scanned version of an old publication, containing lovely pictures and diagrams, plus terse useful explanations. Subjects include magnetic meters of various classes, standard cells, resistors, shunts, photocells, rectifiers, electrostatic devices, tachos, and more. http://bitsavers.org/test_eq...

Re: Test Equipment Anonymous (TEA) : Discussion and Group Therapy Thread
As for the others, you can't train common sense, work ethic, or that sort of thing. Eventually people have to stand on their own two feet but not everyone can to the same extent but, far worse, are the malicious ones that slack off or deliberately damage things. Arguably even worse are the well-mea...

How about, you don't get to touch anything beyond a litter-picker, until you've proved some minimal technical competency? Nice idea, but who would be willing to take the responsibility for stating someone is competent? Or not incompetent? Who tests the testers? Who trains the trainers? With gliding...

Re: Test Equipment Anonymous (TEA) : Discussion and Group Therapy Thread
I guess it's hard to find good technicians whether it's a paid or volunteer environment. Somebody needs to train them. If that isn't possible then have supervision. If that isn't possible (e.g. voluntary organisation) then at least have three people working alongside each other, so that there is a ...

I've seen very high value (100A plus) fuses filled with sand (or something). I assumed it was there for quenching. When it blows you want it to stop conducting, not to continue as an arc. Well, these cigars are 30A, but also "Eaton Bussmann Series Class RK5 fuse, FRS-R, time-delay, dual-elemen...

The eevblog video posted yesterday ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TYtdpbFWuA ) about fuse characteristics being permanently changed by exposure to low temperature was interesting. He was showing fuses in the context of current shunt overcurrent protection in multimeters. They are crude things w...
