Re: 10 MHz GPS disciplined oscillator + signal distribution

IIRC, WSCs were only superseded as the definition in 1990, by the Josephson Junction. They had a long reign. I'm pretty sure they were used in some form in early bench DMMs. They were. In my Solartron 1420 it is used, via a trimpot, to calibrate the internal voltage reference - a neon bulb. I presu...

OTOH my Land Rover's fuel gauge (scale: Roentgens/hour) came from this famous shop in Cambridge: https://www.cambridgeonline.co.uk/img/250px/6226.jpg I think I've been in that shop before myself, was it in Mills Road, along with the other shop I used to frequent, Cambridge Recycle I think it was ca...

Re: 10 MHz GPS disciplined oscillator + signal distribution

We spoke about WSCs and volt nuttery briefly at FRARS last August. We did indeed :) Shame the Harwell ARS website only contains the ambiguous statement "the rally will not be taking place in Feb 23". WSCs were a thing I read about in a physics book when I was ten and I wanted one because ...

Re: 10 MHz GPS disciplined oscillator + signal distribution

I have a idle ambition to own a Weston Standard Cell. The saturated ones are usually buggered. I do have one that isn't, as the calibrator inside a DVM. The unsaturated ones are OK provided they've not been upended/shocked. Good luck with shipping them legally and safely! They make good temperature...

Re: tinysa ultra vs hp8569b

have seen that movie many times, but never heard that story. when backpacking up state we always joked around the campfire about coming across a banjo playing albino. sort of a let down to know that the slack-jawed backwoods yokels probably can't actually play the banjo. I only heard it a few weeks...

Ah. Doing more with less. Good hack. I love the hacker ethic, even if (or perhaps because) it does merge into hilbilly engineering sometimes. oh great.....thanks buddy......now every time i look at that sweeper "dueling banjos" will be going thru my head. I'll give you McGyuver if you pre...

Well some people would disagree with you about "That YIG goodness" - people who've had a YIG oscillator fail. have owned 8555a's, an 8569b, and various 8620 plug in modules with yigs and never had one go tits up. (maybe i am just lucky?) since i never got to work on one it motivated me to...

Re: standard emojis?

That is what mnementh said, all the built-in ones are still working, but support for others that are not built-in but are considered "standard" which used to work now no longer do. The built-in ones are somewhat restrictive in their selection and could do with being expanded. Nah. We've m...

Re: Sony/Tek 314 PSU Re-cap

Your next assignment, should you choose to accept it, is to extract the Tek492 PSU for recapping.

The one after that is to replace the Tek1502's front panel brightness pot, which has 2kV across it, and can be operated in driving rain and stored under 300mm of water.

Bought something at the last Ramco auction. Not TE, a 19" rack mount radio receiver. Yet again poor packing by Ramco and poor handing by Parcel Force resulted in a bent side frame and bowed front panel. One thing sent to me by Ramco a few years ago (pre-covid) had a bent carrying handle for si...

Nothing wrong with making a big profit, I do that when I can  But I at least wait until I've received the item and tested it before advertising it and I don't use other peoples photos (whiich may be illegal) True, but 12 times is bit on steep side, and of course, knowing Ramco, if they though...

No, not just a title. Also a scapegoat to sacrifice to any hungry regulators or wandering herds of self appointed do-gooders. 25 years ago and more innocent times. Typical day example is today: I hit a total of 1396 calories consumed and I'm full. Not a lot! That was some shreddies + skimmed milk + sugar this morning with a black coffee (no sugar!). As for the benefits of small amounts of exercise... that is entirely wrong. As little as 20-30 minutes of real exercise... provided it is enough to actually make you break a sweat... done regularly 3-5 times a week will raise your basal metabolic rate considerably compared to a sedentary lifestyle....
