As a 10yo kid I built a raft out of scrap wood and every plastic or metal container I could get my hands on. It floated on a shallow mere, and I fished freshwater mussels up with my feet. Didn't find any pearls :(

Don't knock hillbilly engineering :)

.
I had my own little SS Mountain William made of 2 plastic 55 gallon drums similar to this with a trolling motor in tractor mode between them. Toodled it around our fish pond all the time as a yout'.

That looks far more professional than the one I made. I could only get a couple of much small food containers from a canteen, plus any bottles I could find.

Consequently the whole thing listed quite a bit.

Yeah, they came from the local food canning plant for a pittance, and we used them on the farm for everything from seed-storage to water/feed troughs to "emergency patch material". Grand-dad was quite adept at carving them up with a chainsaw as needed.
