Can you say "fucking ugly"? I can. Holy shit that thing is fucking ugly.
It is distinctive in a steampunk way.

I don't think it is as eyeball scratching as those 70s Fluke meters inspired by Star Trek TOS shuttles with a nicotine colour scheme.

Zero issues with it here but it always stays open in its own window on this PC.

Amusing side note: I went looking for a pic of Xev to attach to the above post... I had to scroll through 3 pages of hits before I found one that wasn't a pr0n site or chaturbate posting on antisocial media, almost every one of them blurred out.

Sooo, am in KiCad this fine morning, (5.x because I've run out of storage on my computer and need to Do A Lot Of Stuff... ) and I'm trying to create a PCB design for a [hp] 5245L extender. The circuit is easy enough, but what kind of connector is it? Do anyone of you have access to one, and can you help? (The ultimate help of course would be the person with a spare one, of course... I like my PCB editing exercises, but I'm a lazy sod too)

What are you trying to extend? The regular circuit boards, or the plug in?

I believe the plug-in uses 50 position Centronics connectors. It looks like NorComp makes them currently.

Mouser shows stock of a PCB mount right angle female; p/n 112-050-213R001; about $9 US/ea

Right angle male is p/n 112-050-113R001; also about $9 us/ea, but no stock expected until nearly Christmas.
https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/No ... 2ZQg%3D%3D

Mouser does have male and female solder cup versions in stock.

You could also search "Centronics connector" on the Bay of Evil, too, but most of what comes up there are IDC ribbon-style versions.

The PCBen. So, a 2x 15 card edge connector, with IIRC ~3,92mm pitch. The plug-in interface is right now not as interesting, simply because I have no plug-ins  (there was one locally couple months back, but I've got the 5245 because it is iconic, not because I need to count higher than 50MHz. For that, I've got newer and better counters. )

newer cannot be disputed.

but "better" is subjective. nothing smells better than a 5245 warming up.

(and the freqq thinks they sound better too. but others here do not agree)

Oh dear... and here I've been polluting månsaxel's brain in the Discord with suggestions of hacksaw/epoxy abusing a cheap JAMMA extension cable.

I shall go sit in the corner now... :confounded:

The original extenders used Cinch 64-720-15 connectors. A current equivalent appears to be the EDAC 305-030-500-24. Mouser shows some current stock, they’re about $7/each.

Better is vectorised!

The smell is better in the 5245.

The feel is better in the 5245.

The ability to count to a gig (Kilo-Megacycles?) and beyond is better in the 5316A.

The weight, well.. Lessay that the 5245 is sturdy, except where it is not. It broke its IEC 60320 C14 inlet. Mixed blessings.

I like both. And I'd really want to build the OXCO add-on board for the 5316 some day.

Immensely! Thanks! Though it seems that the "555" or "556" contact arrangement are even more suited, since they're called "EXTENDER
BOARD BEND" in the documentation.

*wanders off to Read The Fine Documentation again and whack KiCAD into submission.*

Being labeled in l-cycles rather than x-Hz certainly feels better, no matter what the disease vector. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Actually no. Not at this end. And, my 1966 service manual for the 5245L says Hertz. I was anachronisting. So, there.

Interestingly they've used the Linear Technology logo on the plastic caps.
