I was at a wedding where they had hired a marquee and had loads of helium balloons and big glow sticks. It was getting on in the evening and was totally dark.
Feeling inventive, I got a few helium balloons and tied the strings to a glow stick bent into a circle. I walked a few yards away, behind a hedge, released it and watched it rise and disappear on the wind. I thought no more of it.
When I got back to the marquee a friend told me that a minute or two before this chap had rushed in breathless, and told him that he'd just seen the damnedest thing ever. It was a circle of light just floating through the air. It must have been a UFO.

It was a UFO. I have seen many many UFOs.

It was a UFO to him, in that it was to him Unidentified, Flying and an Object. It also took him by surprise.
Later on I got five of the glow stick rings and put them together and gathered enough balloons to lift them. I launched it from the field where the marquee was. People came out of the marquee to watch the glowing rings float away.
The next day I went to help clear up the mess. A couple of people complimented me on the magnificent firework display I'd put on. Fireworks? You know, the glowing rings you arranged. Oh yes, thanks.
I assume the excitable gent cottoned on at some point.

Yeah...
People and their perception of the world can be .... wierd.
I blame Arthur Conan Doyle. He came up with the spurious and utterly unimaginative "When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."

I mean it's not wrong but the set of things that is impossible is unknown so the statement is nonsense. I had that argument with ex bd140 after she made me sit through hours of a Sherlock Holmes detective game by suggesting that at no point was it impossible that it was aliens abducting and murdering people because it's impossible to prove that aliens don't exist.
I think that neatly bridged the last two comments

Their perceptions can also be shaped, as con men and sleight-of-hand artists know well. The shaping doesn't always work and can come unstuck.
When my cousin Graham was 12 he was invited to a Christmas party with a magician. When the magician had done the usual stuff of pulling rabbits out of hats and making things disappear, he asked for five kids to help in a test to show how well they could count and how good their memories were. Graham was at the end of the line. He gave the first kid one ball, the second two, up to Graham who was given five.
The magician started with the first kid and said he'd given them two balls. The kid said he'd been given one and the magician said he'd given him two. He took the ball, turned to the audience and said, "Look two balls. This little boy can't count and can't remember anything". And so it went on until he got to Graham.
"How many balls did I give you little boy?"
"Five."
"I'm sure I gave you six."
"You gave me five, but I've got twelve now".
They were hollow sponge balls with a slit, so one ball could be put inside another. While the magician was occupied with the other kids, Graham had been investigating the balls and dismantled them.

Anders posted a article about the show in our Discord; intrigued, I sought it out and found that the IA hosts what appears to be the entire series plus some specials. This is a big thing that's different over in the UK vs Dumbfuckistan; the only "radio shows" that can survive over here are "Reality TV" type talk radio/listener abuse hotlines.
