My buddy. Jumps up on the bench and rubs his head on my arm asking to get a head scratch. Then he lays down and watches me.

A picture - but not an image - from the last Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest https://www.bulwer-lytton.com/2024

Crime & Detective
Dishonorable Mentions

Staring unblinkingly into the pleading, tear-filled eyes of yet another dame looking for me to solve all her problems, I sighed, stretched, scratched my whiskers, stuck my hind leg in the air and bent my spine at a 45-degree angle to reach down and lick my butt clean, then donned my fedora—Taco, Cat Detective, was officially on the case.

Not only expensive to buy, but also expensive vets bills.

Same is true for dogs, except that boots are used :(

Yes, I do occasionally mention to people that I don't like dogs with their snouts kicked in.

What I find much more telling is how many owners of such animals' appearance is so very much like them. It's as if looking like you were swallowing your face were a cultural value or something.

Yes, there are many examples of how someone grows to look like their SO and/or pet. In some cases I've wondered (to myself!) whether incest was involved :)

No doubt there subruddits and twattertags for those with too much time on their hands.

Our old dishwasher sprung a leak and building maintenance determined it needed to be replaced. So today a new one was installed. While maintenance was here Harley was locked up in the bedroom so he wouldn't get in the way (Trust me, he would). After they left I let him out and he immediately noticed the new dishwasher. True to form he had to go check it out. It was running so every time it changed cycles he jumped back and then sniffed it some more. Finally he laid down to guard over it. It's funny because he completely ignored the old dishwasher. And we rarely used it. Maybe once or twice a month. But this one has to be watched. You never know what might jump out of it.

It's been off for hours but still needs another checkout to insure it's safe.

He's an indoor cat and we don't have rodents so he has never seen one. But I've seen his hunting instinct kick in with the odd flying insect so I suspect any mouse would be a goner.

After the dishwasher completed it's cycle I opened it so he could check out the inside. He sniffed around for a few minutes and was satisfied there was no danger and walked away. So I'm surprised a few hours later he's back to check it out again.

Is a cat without a hunting insect instinct a cat? (Goddam autokorrupt)

A self-propelled thigh-warmer with claws, probably, but a cat...

Cats vary a lot in their hunting instincts. Some are fully into it, rats, magpies, rabbits etc. Others might reach out and snag a mouse, if it doesn't involve reaching too far.

Even one week and 2 wash cycles later we still have to make sure it's safe.

Do you chuck it into the washing machine on the general fabrics program and then into the tumble dryer, or do you have to wait for a sunny windy day, and then hand wash it and hang it on the washing line?

That's a dishwasher, not a clothes washer. :D

We have a full laundry on the bottom floor of our building.

My cat was watching me build my son a new computer last night and as I was about to fit the processor into (or rather on to its nail bed, haha) my lab cat suddenly started talking to me with the same voice she uses when she sees a reflected spot of light that she loves to chase. I looked at her and she was staring at the motherboard with the same look on her face as if see was watching a laser light spot or something. Looking back at the motherboard again, I too notice a glint coming from the AM5 socket, so I grabbed a photo on my phone and enlarged it. What I found alarmed me, one of 1,718 contact pins in the socket was badly bent, I reckon my cat was a computer engineer in an earlier life :D, she certainly saved the day. I;d hate to think what could have happened if had installed everything and powered it up.

So once again, I'm waiting on Amazon bringing me a replacement board and collecting the old one.

So no picture of a cat, instead a picture of a fault spotted by a cat
