*kicks the dwagon in the tail* will you please stop parroting the idiots? It's "leading edge", not bloody "bleeding edge"
It's both. There's the leading edge, and then there's the bleeding edge which is where you've got sliced open by adopting leading edge technologies inappropriately, usually at the behest of some pig ignorant senior management who have heard about it and want to be all "state of the art" without any clue as to whether the technology in question is applicable, suitable, or mature enough to actually be fielded.
Then there is the TV Production field, where the Production staff see a spectacular video effect achieved somewhere with the use of a Megabuck of new Technology, & say "We wanna do that, too!"
The Engineering Dept has no budget, & have to do it with "a roll of coax & some chewing gum".
They do make it happen, receive little thanks, & move on to the next "impossible" challenge.
Just guess which Dept is regarded as a "cost centre" & are up for "pruning" when Management get the taste for blood?

Fascinating.
I could see it working with a fresh frog's leg but wondered what would happen when the frog's leg was properly dead. I read on.
The major drawback of the frog galvanoscope is that the frog leg frequently needs replacing.[22] The leg will continue to respond for up to 44 hours, but after that a fresh one must be prepared
So the user would need a supply of frogs to be killed and dissected to maintain it.
And here was I thinking that replacing PP3s in meters I don't use that much, was a nuisance that comes round depressingly often.
The Daniell Cell (1836) was much more reliable and stable than other cells of the time and a vast improvement. At one time it was a definition of the Volt. Unfortunately is had to be dismantled after use, to avoid degradation.
We don't know we're born.

Some good thoughts there. I would hate to be the test gear department back in those days.

Or, if you were in the bio-sciences field, "find me a 'beautiful milkmaid'[1] and hand me a small boy"
[1] The "beautiful milkmaid" seems to have been a frequent image in the art and literature of this period.

Seems a horrible waste to just burn all that seasoned hardwood. There's a small fortune there if cut down into DIY-pen blanks. Bet it'd make some awesome butcher-block too.

Dunno. The staves have to be steamed and trimmed into shape, and as whisky barrels are a valuable commodity they look after, I can't believe the discarded staves would be much use for anything but firewood.

Reminds me of when, for a time during my long visit to the UK in 1971/72, I worked at a place called "South African Wine Farmers" in Southampton.
The bulk wine was delivered from "Seth Effica" by ship, contained in large, fixed stainless steel tanks, & was pumped from the dock into similar tanks at "SAWFA", where it was transferred to "hogsheads" as required.
They had a big stack of the latter out in the yard, some as useable spares, others for use in repair.
An old bloke, whose hands had become too shaky to do Cooper's work anymore, looked after these.
He always seemed to be "two parts drunk", & we wondered why, until we found his secret.
The wood absorbed a fair bit of wine, and after sitting there for a few months, would "give up" this wine back into the barrel.
He would go out, with one of the big cans that hogshead bungs came in, turn the bung hole downward, knock the bung out, letting the wine drain into the empty "bung can"
Over time, he harvested enough grog to stay comfortably boozed.
Interestingly, the Cooper's jobs were considered to be a "dying trade" back then, but in more recent years it has made a comeback.
