Incidentally this will go, as all these things do, absolutely fucking nowhere other than on the unemployment statistics when the tech firms move out of the UK.

Well the thing is they won't be removing the service. They have said that. WhatsApp and Apple for example said they won't be compromising end to end encryption because if they do that for one country they have to do it globally and that would affect their market position as well as shitting on the users. That means that the local subsidiaries in the UK are now subject, as registered offices, to prosecution for violation of the law. The answer is likely that they will be withdrawing the aforementioned offices from the UK. Anyone who doesn't want to go with it or is ancillary will be kicked on the street.

I was under the impression that they would remove the services

It might turn out to be still profitable to just pay the fines as "cost of doing business" and simply pass that cost onto the customer.

Yes that's the real outcome I expect to see. It will not be enforced until they need someone's data and then it'll be a quick earner on the fines.

My father had a (?1920s?)book (well, series of books) about how to build a car. It started by telling the reader how to build the tools to build a car.
