Crunch

Post by Specmaster »

Going to pick my son up from work this evening, I had some person in front of me, and we were just approaching the entrance to his trading estate when the person noticed that the road was closed just beyond the entrance for bridge repairs. So he turned off left into another trading estate just a few yards before my son's one, but instead of turning into the estate, he started to do a U turn using the entrance to give him a wider swing at it. That left me with nowhere to go to avoid him and I went into his OSF wheel smashing it and the suspension etc leaving it at a rakish angle, smashing my bumper, NSF wing, headlight, grill etc. :x

He admitted fault and his insurance company has already been in touch and said that they will repair my car for free (too bloody right they will) and will also get me a loan car while the work is being done at their approved repairers.

Not replying until I have spoken to my insurers in the morning to make sure that they are happy with that. I'm glad that I have the dashcam to back me up as it proves who was to blame and saved the footage automatically after detecting the impact.

I'm just hoping that my car is repaired, rather than they say it's not worth it and write it off. Mine is drivable still, but the other car was not movable. It was a Mazda CX3.

Now here is a thing, 22 years ago, just 100 yds further back down the same road, I had a similar accident in a Passat when a person tried to turn their car round from a lay-by and pulled out right of me again, but I was carrying more speed on that occasion and my car rode up and landed on his bonnet, writing my Passat off. On that occasion, I had 2 perfect witnesses, policemen who were just coming out of the police station a few yards away, they threw the book at the other driver.

interesting story......sorry to hear it though.

but i curse you for the 10 minutes it took to look up OSF and NSF.

in future please use the proper "passenger side front" and "drivers side front" description.

or better yet.....starboard and port side. (working in a shipyard in the 70's is finally paying off)

edit.....just realized you guys drive on the wrong side of the road......so saying drivers side would just confuse us who drive on the correct side of the road in trying to picture the nature of the accident

edit 2 ...... maybe you need to include a plan view sketch. oh......be sure it has a north arrow.

Sorry about that but here just to help you learn the OSF and NSF, Starboard, Port, Passenger side front and Drivers side front thingy I attach a still from my dash cam footage just as impact is beginning, oh and North is on the left of the photo, I forgot to include an arrow for you, so I trust the written description will suffice?

Too true, it was jammed down to the floorboards, not it helped much, good job I was already slowing down to make the turn into the next exit (visible in the photo) so I was doing 19mph.

Spend all morning on the phone to my insurers claims dept, who have already arranged the repair of mine and the delivery of a replacement hire car, as they have spoken to both the other driver and his insurance company who have admitted liability, so they are pressing on with getting mine repaired asap. Their approved repairer has already contacted me to arrange collection of my car and the hire car will be with me in the next hour, so can't complain so far. ;)

My car is being collected tomorrow by the repairer and my hire car has arrived, a really tinny and lightweight Nissan Qashqai which bounces all over the road and is very uncomfortable after being in my car. I get the feeling that had I been driving that last night, the damage sustained by me would be considerably greater, for sure. It has the feel of a coke can for strength, and press a bit hard on a panel, and I'm sure you could easily put a dent in it. :(

Looks like another Rav4 clone. Seriously... when Toyota released this latest gen of the model, it seemed like everybody started making their SUVs look like that... by the time we bought ours, it was hard to tell a Rav4 from every other pregnant station wagon out there.

Well my sons have a ride in it, and they all pronounced it a "souless piece of shit". It is so uncomfortable, but it does have some good kit installed but the radio is so crap, its all bass and nothing else, so if heavy bass is your thing, then this car is for you, its miles away from being anywhere near hi-fi quality.

ISTR reading that some of the aboriginal tribes don't say "something is on the left of you", but "something is north east of you".

Yeah, that well-describes the Rav4; but in all honesty, that is exactly what we wanted: A nice boring vehicle known to b A) zero-assache for at least 10 years, and 2) the right configuration interior-wise that I can get in and out with my bum knee without having to haul myself up bodily by the car door.

The Rav4 resolves the 2nd part handily; I can even fit my fat arse in the back seat as long as the front seat isn't all the way back. As it's really just a pregnant Camry, we have every reason to expect it to last 10-15 years with just oil changes, and longer if we actually take care of it.

Yeah, the engine is only a 1.3L petrol (gasoline) but it is pretty dammed quick, it has sprightly performance so that's not an issue, but the ride is so joggily, it follows every undulation of the road, the seats are narrow and for me at least, unsupportive, the audio gear is just basic, it seems to roll a lot in corners. The engine management needs to be more refined for instance when slowing down, the auto box changes down, but the management does not always manage to match engine speed correctly, and it over compensates at times and the whole car takes a lunge forward necessitating a harder application of the brakes in order to avoid getting too close to the vehicle in front. It also, despite being lightweight and a small engine, it does not seem to be any more economic than my heavy 2L diesel is, both get around 48mpg on runs, although I suspect the Nissan may get more if it was a conventional car body, SUV's are less aerodynamic.

I can't wait to see my car returning home again and I once again wallow in its comfort, even if like I do have to haul myself up by the door. ;)

EDIT:
I just looked up the spec for this car and is a mild hybrid it might explain why there is sometimes a forward surge at low speeds and on braking at times?
