New battery for EV, game changer?
Could this new technology be the game changer for EV cars?

Edit. Just come across this as well, thoughts?

Anything that either Elon Musk, or Will Ferrell (Musk fan-boy) say re battery tech, is complete bollocks. I don't even need to watch the vids.
TL;DR no, not game changers, just lies

Musk claims his cars drive themselves. Nothing else needs to be said.
Battery technology and RAM technology have one thing in common. Every year a revolutionary new technology appears, works in the labs small scale experiments, and doesn't make it to large scale deployment.

Re: New battery for EV, game changer?
"For the foreseeable future Tesla will be concentrating on nickel based chemistries for longer range vehicles and iron phosphate chemistries for shorter range vehicles." Musk said "manganese has interesting potential".
It classes as a "Forward looking statement" as they put it to circumscribe corporate press releases. It's a puff piece. They'd still be Li-ion batteries. This development, when and if it comes about, might decrease cost, and might increase cycle life. It's a long way from revolutionising EVs.
Does anyone remember the fuss about room temperature superconductors in the late 80s? Superconductors were discovered that operated well above absolute zero. It was remarkable and of considerable theoretical interest. People were talking excitedly about faster computers and lossless power lines. The highest temperature achieved so far, at normal pressure, is -135 C. I've not heard that "room temperature" superconductors have any practical applications.

Yes I remember the superconductors, and what about the other great idea of the time, computers using light instead of electrons, especially for in the CPU?. Did anyone ever get one or see one beyond the ones developed for experimentation purposes?Zenith wrote: ↑Sun Jul 23, 2023 9:17 am "For the foreseeable future Tesla will be concentrating on nickel based chemistries for longer range vehicles and iron phosphate chemistries for shorter range vehicles." Re: New battery for EV, game changer?
A couple of other things that were about in the late 80s were cold fusion and crop circles. There was at least one article in New Scientist discussing crop circles and their "energy patterns".
I asked a colleague about them. He said crop circles were almost certainly a hoax. Cold fusion would be something to take seriously if the results reported by Fleischmann and Pons could be reproduced, which he doubted. It remains a highly controversial subject.

Re: New battery for EV, game changer?
As a perpetrator of at least one crop circle, yes that.
It was even featured in Bishop's Stortford Observer!

Re: New battery for EV, game changer?
Well the problem with superconductors is that they usually require cryogenic environments. At the moment the energy balance and operational difficulties of a cryogenic device tend to outweigh the advantages several times over. Thus "room temperature superconductors" are a real goal.Specmaster wrote: ↑Sun Jul 23, 2023 9:44 am Yes I remember the superconductors, and what about the other great idea of the time, computers using light instead of electrons, especially for in the CPU?. The problem is the only thing they've got that is superconducting at room temperature so far is what they call sulfur ± carbon hydride (CSHx) which has a transition temperature of around 270K (about -3 oC). Sounds good yeah? Well it's still no fucking good because it has to be pressurised to 270 GPa (3.9 million psi!).

I heard that the farmer was still looking for you, armed with fully loaded 12 bore you scallywag.
Those things were all other place at the time.

Nah he was happy in the end. We burned down a whole field of his which was unusable afterwards so he sold it for a fortune to developers and they built Birchanger Green Services on itSpecmaster wrote: ↑Sun Jul 23, 2023 2:49 pmI heard that the farmer was still looking for you, armed with fully loaded 12 bore you scallywag.

Re: New battery for EV, game changer?
A lot of farmers were happy to charge a couple of quid for folks to come and investigate the phenomenon.
I'm not sure whether the wheat that had been flattened would be incapable of being harvested anyway, so all those couple of quids in cash might have been a very welcome bonus.

The aliens clearly tailored crop circles to the local audience; near Cambridge they created a superb Mandlebrot set

Re: New battery for EV, game changer?
Toyota is already using manganese-enriched LiPo batteries (as Musk has been promoting) in current models; however there actually is some real news in between the detail-poor bloviation in this very possibly AI-generated video: Toyota claims to have cracked the mass-production barrier to solid-state lithium batteries, and has committed to a 5-years or less rollout of this tech, and a massive decrease in the pricing of its current manganese-enriched LiPo powered batteries. Either of these revelations by itself should massively impact adoption of EVs in the near future.
If they can deliver on the 10-minute charge promise of these batteries in that timeframe, it will be a complete game-changer.
Sadly, the Lithium part of modern batteries is also really environmentally evil... and it will only get worse.

Finally, an agreement, this is what I've attempting to highlight, but it met with so much negativity that I ceased mentioning it for fear of falling out with anyone.
I found these 2 videos recently, and it is very alarming that there has been so many fires onboard these Ro-ro car transporters lately.
Now, I'm not stating that EV cars caused the fires but where they were present, once they became involved in the fires, it was game over.

Re: New battery for EV, game changer?
Or maybe this battery could be the game changer, bit early yet, have to see the how the raw materials are sourced etc, but looks like they are not as dangerous as current batteries, and they are British.

Re: New battery for EV, game changer?
It's a game changer when it's shipping in a new car and meets the expectations rather than the speculations.
I will *never* watch a speculative YT video. They are clickbait and just more ticking of the death clock.

Re: New battery for EV, game changer?
Like I said; there is real news there: A major manufacturer, one that is already shipping the latest manganese-enriched tech, has committed to rolling out solid-state batteries. The poor SNR of the video is why I summarized and posted links to actual news articles.
