I was going to make the traditional sotto voce mutter about "them" leaving having improved things on both sides of the pond. But that would be rude (worse: inaccurate), so I won't.

The dead self-powered loudspeaker from the mosque didn't go on the bench yesterday after all. The friend involved with that had some minor surgery and didn't feel up to it. He had a lead-up time to the surgery where he couldn't eat and after the ordeal, he was wiped out and decided to call it off with the speaker. Wiped out and hungry so there was a change of plans. Instead of the basement workshop, we did the back yard instead until the mosquitos came out and we moved the food inside and ate indoors:

Yesterday's "adventure", which can nowadays only be seen in a single place.

Yup, the world's last ocean-going paddle steamer, PS Waverely.

Here's the nearest to TE:

And here's more of that very impressive room. I have pleasing videos; nothing hidden there.

There are two ways passengers can get past that "mind your head" obstacle: directly over it, or upstairs and outside.

You ought to be able to guess what passengers are climbing over. Note the blurred piston; the photo was 1/30s, so it isn't surprising.

Note the green walkway on the left; the engineers use that when oiling the engine. HSE? Wozzat? Passengers can't quite reach the moving parts; they would have to climb over the mahogany balustrade.

The lifeboat (from the station on the far right) came out to meet it (and guide it in?)

It isn't the first time I've been on the Waverley, but the 6hr trip was the longest. I wonder if I'll go on it again?

Very interesting - thanks for posting about that.

Purely out of strange coincidence, I just went for a rather (unsuccessful) bike ride to Kingston upon the river and saw this at Teddington:

IMG_0738.jpeg

Also in Kingston, a Printed Circuit Bear

IMG_0751.jpeg

As for the unsuccessful bit, it was foot deep flooding along the path on the way back. Damn that tide. I don't mind getting wet feet and legs so I powered it through a section. 95% of the way through, the drag got me so the only way was down. Minor road rash on an elbow. At least it entertained a few people who decided sensibly to go the long way around. I got a slow clap from a sarcastic git though

Curious! I was wondering how it found its way fro Gt Yarmouth to Kingston, found this https://www.nationalhistoricships.org.u ... outh-belle which says
" the paddle wheels and funnel are dummies. "

Effing cheats!

There's been a spate of similar statues with local themes around here. I rather like the pop-up art in a room opposite Cardiff Castle; fake printed circuit cityscape, real printed circuits...

Not even surprised it was fake. It was making diesely sorts of noises!

An art. I am disappointed. I'd rather have the boards in stock for parts!

Ship, yes, but not that sailing.

There's the engine room starting at 6:50. The people walking on the other side illustrate just how open it is.

It also saves me bothering to put my video up.

Mendips Radio Rally tomorrow; the season starts in earnest.

I came across the collection of videos on YT about her months ago, machinery fascinates me, always has done since I was a child, I can recall the moment I became hooked, it was on a junior school trip to Southampton where the highlight for me was a tour of the Queen Mary while she was docked and the engine room inspired me.

She's well worth having a trip on, even if only a short one. You have to plan, since she's only in each area for a short part of the summer. Details are only available a couple of months before sailing, but... "Waverley sails from over 60 ports and piers around the UK. For details on each port/pier please refer to the appropriate area by clicking the link below: Scotland, London & Thames Estuary, South West, South Coast & Isle of Wight, Bristol Channel & South Wales, North Wales & The Mersey, Northern Ireland" https://waverleyexcursions.co.uk/plan-y ... re-points/

I last saw her a decade ago when I was touring west Scotland. On the way in to Brodick, I saw her unmistakable outline heading for the harbour. Serendipity.

I came back from the US on the Queen Mary, during rather rough weather. I don't remember it since I was 18 months old, but my parents certainly did.

I went on a trip on the Waverley about 1994 or 1995. We left from Penarth early on a summer evening, we went across the Bristol Channel and visited Portishead. It was probably a two and a half hour trip. The engine was impressive. They must have planned the tides carefully.

My friends lived just up the hill from Penarth pier, so after a pleasant trip and a few G&Ts, getting home was easy.

One of my cars had 16 forward gears and 4 reverse gears.
I've driven such constructs too. Once through central Vienna, nearly with police escort. I do have a truck and bus license. We use the very Swedish expressions "split" and "range" to describe the two extra gear boxes.

Anyone that has experience with Roadranger gearboxes well knows what range and split mean. ;)

Just a heads up - please pass the message on to anyone still on Discord.

So I went to fill up the dishwasher and came back and there's "suspicious activity" on my Discord account. They force you through a phone number verification process. Now I will not be giving my number to Discord for various reasons, mostly because they're rotten to the core cunts. Not only that as it's the first time it has asked for it, it's a pointless security measure not for the sake of identification but for data and contact collection. Ergo they can get fucked until I can be bothered to deal with it, which may be never.
