Quick update on the ultrasonic cleaner, it did arrive all safe and sound along with enough jewellery cleaner concentrate to make upto about 20 litres but apart a quick unbox to check unwrap to check that is arrived in an undamaged state, which it did, nothing else has been done with it yet due to MIL being rushed into hospital with a stroke and being placed on palliative care and DNR. Eventually passing after 4 days and now begins the process of clearing of her house and disposal, so for a while at least I shall be even more of a lurker than I've been. It's going to be a long haul with SWMBO as she doted on her mum with long daily telephone chats (good job the calls were all included in the monthly fee) and now she is going at a loose end.
I will get around to taking some photos and using the cleaner in due course and sharing them with you all.
My deepest condolences to you and SWMBO, Spec - very sorry to hear. Here's hoping that you get through everything as smoothly as possible. There's never a good time for that sort of thing to happen.

The next project. A Tek 5110 which I should be picking up from the seller this coming Saturday. It will be my first 5000 series scope and it will get my usual clean/re-cap/restoration. But not until I complete the 7B92 repair which has been on hold due to no time to work on it. I should have the time this week.

Oh, how sad. My condolences. Lurk or post, do what you feel is best. Wife lost her father to a heart attack one year ago. That wasn't easy for her, nor me, so I can readily imagine.

I have the 5440. With a broken horizontal plugin. I have bought a spare part for it, a special Tek IC, and then I just sort of lost my box of round tuits needed to fix it. Other than the, they're nice scopes those. Also even if not painted blue. The true gem to get of course is the curve tracer. Made of unobtanium that is.
AVGresponding wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2025 11:00 amScored twice over the weekend; Tek DMM916, which I've been after for a while, and a Fluke 8125A. Naturally I'll post pics as and when they arrive
It has some very "interesting" circuit design in there, especially the digital logic and "storage circuit" and the trimming mechanism. The case is such that if I sold one I wouldn't need to wrap it in bubble wrap or cardboard
You'll need the manual for the 8120, which is the same except for the case.

Only just seen this. My condolences. Sorry to hear!
I've made it impossible for me to recover my account again now.
Ah, but that thread was from a time when The Other Plaice was still decent By that I mean before I felt compelled to use the (very limited) "ignore" thread/member facilities there.

You'd have to ignore the moderati as well.
I await the day they decline into the marginalised insignificance they deserve and slowly fade away to oblivion.

Moderation is an impossible task; it will always be wrong in one way or another.
My concern is more the number of inane posts/posters. That seems to have been increasing faster over the past year, and several useful people have left, e.g. TiN, T3sl4co1l. Moderation can never be the answer to those.
Plus then the quality of discourse is falling, in the same way and for the same reasons as it is in the rest of society.
Putin has won; welcome to the Weimar Republic.

I hope that doesn't happen soon, but empires always rot from within. Time's arrow Wheel of Time.
I have to agree about moderation being an impossible task. I'm a moderator on another local forum/social media platform that is actually a global platform but run as local areas to keep things more manageable, Some of my moderator colleagues, in my opinion, are not upto the job as they lack any comprehension of context etc and trample over other people with their jack boots and that includes their other fellow moderators and have made themselves a laughingstock among many of the members. If the site was not chasing the money and in that pursuit have replaced many office staff with AI bots, I think that they would have been catapulted from their lofty perches long ago.
I've made it impossible for me to recover my account again now.
I noticed that. I perhaps should do the same; The owner's gone off the rails, especially with him pampering posts that contain the usual trigger words the crazy right uses to describe things like decency and compassion. Makes me sick.

It is not impossible, just expensive in time and most community owners are not willing to put the effort in.
Roughly, the moderation has been so inconsistent and off touch that the incumbents are heavily pushing wingnuttery all over the place. The end game is that it becomes normalised and more objective contributors leave, resulting in amplification of the new status quo. I suspect that because this drives traffic to the owner or the owner aligns with it, that it is not likely to change.
And that's where I get off. I've watched communities die like that over and over again over the years.

Being an optimist (?what?!) I hope that is wrong even if I fear it is (alt) right.
I'd rather be pleasantly surprised than unpleasantly disappointed.

A useful observation, but "lol emoji" ain't right
I think it's pretty hilarious. It's a fine example of a failure in the swiss cheese model applied to politics. Someone just bought some slices of the cheese and took them out.
tggzzz wrote: ↑Tue Feb 04, 2025 1:36 pm
Not just that. Also a function of how many egoboos you get from acolytes.

That's my normal justification for being a pessimist realist.
Occasionally I have to remind myself that I was one of the very few people that did see the 1999 total eclipse of the sun in Cornwall. There was a hole in the stratus from 5mins before start to 10mins after finish.

Acolytes doesn't feel dirty enough.
I've only seen overenthusiastic admiration of a celebrity, cf the depth perception problem surrounding Musk and Jobs and certain politicians.

A local friend of mine has spent lots of money trying to see the Northern Lights 4 times. Went to Norway and Iceland. No luck. Ended up seeing it out of a Travelodge window in Wales. YMMV.

I suspect it's cheaper to emulate someone else's personality than it is to develop your own. That would explain the lack of depth of some of the acolytes (the term is growing on me).

I can see why the likes of Musk and Jobs are admired. They both achieved a considerable amount. Jobs was certainly a very flawed person.
I've never understood why the tabloid newspapers, and even the dearer ones, seem to believe that the small doings of people like the Kardashians are of vital interest. I suppose it must sell papers, but I can't see why anyone would waste their time reading such tosh.
